The Physical Education and Health Department at Glenbard West High School has made a commitment to helping prepare our students to live healthy, productive and well-rounded physically active lives for the present and the future. * Students will be provided with the foundation for making sound choices that will enable them to pursue a well-balanced, healthy lifestyle. * Physical education will provide all students with a variety of activities and knowledge that will contribute to their physical, mental, and emotional well being. * Students will be shown that physical education is a lifelong process that should be enriched and enhanced at school and at home. |

Freshman P.E. and Sophomore P.E. Freshmen and sophomores develop cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, speed, agility, and body awareness through large muscle activities. Large muscle activity is provided through individual and team sports and fitness units. Students focus daily on physical fitness and skills, techniques, strategies, and rules governing the activities. Students will learn to utilize the Fitness Center equipment. Credit: 1/2 per semester |

Team – building/Leadership During the sophomore year this course will offer students to complete a comprehensive education in leadership training, discovering their greatest potential as a leader, listener, and learner. This course will encounter life-skills through challenges which will focus on teamwork, respect, support, trust, and sportsmanship. Finally, selected students will have an opportunity to return as junior leaders in a freshman or sophomore class. Students will complete an application in order to be considered for the
Teambuilding/Leadership class. Please pick up your application in Guidance and return your applications to Mr. Duncan in the Physical Education Office. Credit: 1/2 per semester |

Junior P.E. and Senior P.E. Junior and senior students choose from a variety of courses in the elective curriculum. For students of this age level, the program contains semester courses of special interest which provide activities appropriate for lifetime fitness practices. Students will learn to utilize the Fitness Center equipment. |

Junior - Senior P.E. Junior-senior co-educational physical education offers both individual and team sports. The daily program is devoted to physical fitness, instruction of skills, technique, strategy, and rules governing the activities. Students learn and participate in tennis, volleyball and basketball. Students will utilize the fitness center every third day. Eligible: 11, 12 Credit: 1/2 |

Dance Arts Students will focus and expand their knowledge of physical fitness through participation in various dance styles. They will learn aerobic dance, jazz dance, hip-hop dance, modern dance, lyrical dance, social dance, and personal defense. Students in Dance Arts will be introduced to the history of these genres and their influence in society today. Students will have the opportunity to create, relate and perform several of these dance styles as well. Eligible: 11, 12 Credit: 1/2 |

Modified Physical Education A modified activity class is offered during one period of the day for students who have some type of physical restriction. The level of activity is modified to fit each participant’s ability. Instruction in tennis, soccer, weight training, aerobic exercise, basketball, folk and square dance, floor hockey, and softball is provided. HEALTH EDUCATION |

Health Students focus on the promotion of a healthy lifestyle through knowledge gained in the following areas: responsible decisionmaking; nutrition; exercise; disease; mental health and stress management; misuse and abuse of drugs; and human sexuality and relationships.
